Beyond Light: Space, Atmosphere, and Career in Video Game Lighting

Lighting is much more than just making a scene look pretty. It's storytelling, composition, emotion, and one of the most powerful tools for bringing an interactive environment to life.

In this new Coffee with Me, we invite you to a relaxed and unfiltered conversation about what it's really like to work as a Lighting Artist in the video game industry, how to build a career in this field, and the role light plays in actual production.

Based on a background in architecture and a passion for the relationship between light and space, we'll discuss the transition to 3D, learning real-time rendering engines, and how lighting becomes an artistic language within video game development.

It will be a relaxed chat about real-world experience in international studios, work processes, artistic and technical decisions, and how to grow professionally within a development team.

In addition, there will be an open Q&A session and direct discussion on:
👉 Lighting and composition in video game environments
👉 How lighting works in real-time engines
👉 What's expected of a Lighting Artist in production
👉 Differences between studios and pipelines
👉 Career advice based on personal experience in the industry

Ana B. Hernández

Senior Lighting artist @ Funcom

As an architect, I've always been fascinated by the relationship between light and space. This led me to want to improve my 3D skills and learn about real-time rendering engines. It was in video games that I found the opportunity to explore this art and develop my professional career. I've had the opportunity to work at companies like Ubisoft, Shapefarm, and currently at Funcom, as part of the development teams for games like "Assassin's Creed: Valhalla" and "Dune: Awakening."
