From the Classroom to the Industry, Building a Career in Character Art

How do you go from being a student to becoming a professional artist in the video game industry? How do you balance teaching, freelance work, and personal projects? And what makes a portfolio stand out among hundreds of applicants?

In this edition of Coffee With, we'll sit down with Gerard Martínez Sánchez, a 3D Artist specialized in stylized characters and props with over 13 years of professional experience, instructor at FX Barcelona Film School, and XP-Pen Spain Ambassador.

Throughout the session, Gerard will share his personal and professional journey, from his early days learning 3D to his current work on real-world productions while mentoring the next generation of artists.

One of the main topics of the discussion will be Manairons, a video game developed alongside 3Cat, where Gerard will provide behind-the-scenes insights into the artistic and technical challenges of the project. He will discuss visual direction, folklore-inspired aesthetics, modeling, texturing, and lighting workflows inside Unreal Engine.

A relaxed and insightful conversation for anyone looking to build a sustainable career in digital art, learn from real production experiences, and gain practical advice from an industry professional.

"Gerard Martínez Sánchez is a 3D Artist specialized in character modeling with more than 13 years of experience creating stylized characters and props for video games.

He has recently worked on Manairons, a video game developed alongside 3Cat, contributing his expertise in modeling, texturing, and lighting within Unreal Engine.

Alongside his professional work, Gerard combines his creative practice with teaching, delivering character art courses at universities and educational institutions across Spain and Latin America.
