Beyond the studio: making a living from art as a freelance artist

Working as a freelance artist is a path full of opportunities, but also challenges. It's not just about creating great art, but also about learning to manage clients, projects, visibility, and professional growth in an increasingly competitive creative industry.

In this Coffee with Me, we'll have a dynamic and engaging conversation about what it's really like to build a career as a freelance artist, what it means to work with major brands, and how to navigate the professional world when your studio is your own project.

We'll talk about real-world experience working with international clients, the different formats in which an artistic career can develop, and how to find opportunities in places that often don't appear on traditional paths.

The session will cover topics such as:

👉 How to start and grow as a freelance artist
👉 Working with brands, cultural projects, and international clients
👉 Adapting to different artistic formats, from illustration to live events
👉 How to manage opportunities, visibility, and professional development
👉 Practical advice for artists who want to make a living from their art

There will also be time for open questions and direct conversation with attendees, to talk candidly about the freelance world from a real-life perspective.

María Emegé

Freelance artist

"I'm an illustrator for companies like the NBA, PlayStation, Adidas, Amazon Prime, The Walking Dead, Ubisoft, FNAC... and I do live painting at events for clients like the Belgian Embassy, Herbal Essences, Sanofi, Westfield...

I recently toured the world with Residente (Calle 13, 34 Grammys), painting at his concerts. Now I'm storyboarding his film Porto Rico, starring Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, and Javier Bardem.

I've also given masterclasses for the UAM, EVAD, UDIT...

In addition, I create interior murals, such as those I did for Drafteados, Juntos Mola Más, and Gracias Madre (Costa Rica)."
